Most British shoppers treat the date on a tin as an instruction. It passes, the tin goes in the bin, and another one goes in the trolley next week without anyone thinking about it. But when you look at what that date legally means, what the Food Standards Agency actually says about it, and what happens inside a sealed tin over years rather than months, it becomes clear that a great deal of perfectly good food is being thrown away on the strength of a number that was never about safety. In this video, we investigate the tins on British shelves and ask one simple question: which of these will still be sound long after the label says otherwise, and which are worth buying at this year's prices?
